Nobelium Owns Up to Cyber Breach

Nobelium Owns Up to Cyber Breach

Nobelium, the Russian hacking group responsible for several cyber-attacks, is-evidently- still at it. In a new espionage campaign, according to Microsoft, the Russian hackers responsible for the successful 2020 breach of US federal agencies have compromised as many as 14 technology companies since May. A different supply chain segment has been targeted this time. businesses that buy and distribute software and those that manage cloud computing are the targets this time. However, Microsoft made no mention of the names of the victim companies or the ultimate targets of the alleged Russian spies. However, Tom Burt, Microsoft Customer Security and Trust Team corporate vice president gave a warning in a blog about the new Russian Nobelium cyber-attack on Sunday.

After CNN reported it, the Russian hacking group had been attempting to infiltrate the US and European government networks using compromised technology vendors. It's the first time Microsoft has commented on the matter. In a statement, Tom Burt, Microsoft's corporate vice president of customer security and trust, said, "Russia is trying to establish long-term, systematic access to a variety of points in the current and future technology supply chain and a surveilling mechanism targets of interest to the Russian government." According to Microsoft, in an attempt to hack over a hundred software resellers and technology companies, the hackers employed common techniques such as phishing.

As per Burt, the ultimate goal of the hackers is to "impersonate an organization's trusted technology partner to gain access to downstream customers. This the latest development in the investigation; it has confounded the US and corporate defenses over the last two years. The hackers are known for hacking into nine US government agencies in December 2020. They tampered software developed by federal contractor SolarWinds to accomplish the hacking feat. Cybercriminals posing as agents of Russia's SVR intelligence service took advantage of a routine software update to inject malicious code into Orion's software, which they then used to their advantage. According to NPR, the number of customers who downloaded the code between March and June 2020, according to Sudhakar Ramakrishna, president and CEO of SolarWinds, was eighteen thousand. "If you take the 18,000 figure and sift through it, you will notice that the affected customers' actual number is significantly less. We have no precise figures at the moment. As part of its "seen and unseen." In response to the SolarWinds security breach, the Biden administration announced a slew of tough sanctions against Russia.

For months, the hackers remained undetected in the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and other government agencies unclassified email networks. A common accusation against Russian intelligence is that they cast a net of potential victims before sifting through in search of valuable targets. Microsoft says this happened in May, with hackers pretending to be from a US. Former US ambassador to Russia and anti-corruption activists in Ukraine were reportedly targets of the spying operation. According to Microsoft, three thousand email accounts at a variety of organizations, the majority of which were based in the United States, were targeted by the malware Nobelium.

In October, Rob Joyce, director of the National Security Agency's Cyber-security Directorate, published the Microsoft announcement on Twitter, urging organizations to follow the company's security recommendations. Previously, defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told CNN that the United States has "offensive options" for responding to cyber-attacks. Still, he did not specify what those options were or ways of implementing it. With revelations that hackers had injected malicious code into a SolarWinds tool, the United States government prioritized cyber-security. The Pipeline shut down due to a ransom-ware attack; it shifted attention to the entire issue, causing the most critical pieces of energy infrastructure in the United States to be shut down as a result.

Facebook Secret Files Were Leaked

Facebook Secret Files Were Leaked

Recently, during the company's quarterly earnings call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked about the wave of coverage based on leaked internal documents. The company's results come amid what is possibly the worst crisis in the company's 17-year history. The Wall Street Journal's "Facebook Files" series was prompted by thousands of pages of internal Facebook documents leaked by whistleblower Frances Haugen, as well as additional news coverage by a consortium of 17 US news organizations on Monday, as well as hearings with US and UK lawmakers. The documents provide the most in-depth examination yet of several of Facebook's most contentious issues, including the struggle to regulate misinformation, the use of its platform by human traffickers, and research on child harm. Facebook has taken a strident stance against numerous reports, claiming that they are inaccurate and misrepresent their research and actions.

Zuckerberg issued a statement earlier this month in response to Haugen's Senate hearing, in which he attempted to discredit the whistleblower. Nonetheless, another former Facebook team member filed an anonymous complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, alleging similar allegations to those made by Haugen. Despite the negative media coverage, the company reminded investors on Monday that it remains a profitable machine. Facebook revenue of $29 billion for the three months ended in September, up 35% from the same period a year ago. Profits totaled nearly $9.2 billion, an increase of 17% over the previous year. The third quarter saw a 12 percent year-over-year increase in the number of people using Facebook's apps, to nearly 3.6 billion. The results were identical to those predicted by Wall Street analysts. Following the earnings report, Facebook's (FB) stock surged to a three-year high in after-hours trading on Monday before settling at around 1% higher. Facebook is not unfamiliar with public relations mishaps.

In most cases, despite public and regulatory outrage, Facebook's business has maintained a healthy growth rate. However, this time may be different. Facebook's massive advertising business is already vulnerable due to changes in Apple's app tracking rules. Apple's iOS 14.5 software update requires users to explicitly consent to apps tracking their behavior and selling their data to advertisers, such as age, location, spending habits, and health information. Facebook has fought the changes hard, warning investors last year that if many users opt-out of tracking, the company's bottom line could suffer. On Monday, Facebook warned that the changes to iOS 14 could result in "continued headwinds" in the fourth quarter of 2021. "We have been sincere about the fact that headwinds are on the horizon, and they were visible in Q3. The most significant effect of iOS 14 changes is" COO Sheryl Sandberg stated this during the company's earnings call on Monday. "As a result, we've encountered two issues: the decreased ad targeting accuracy, increasing the cost of driving results for our advertisers, and measuring those results has become more challenging."

While most of the world was focused on Facebook's real-world issues, the company hinted in its investor report that it prefers investors to look forward rather than back. Starting from the fourth quarter, Facebook Reality Labs, the company's division dedicated to augmented and virtual reality services, will be reported separately from the company's family of apps, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and the company's name-brand social network. According to Facebook Chief Financial Officer Dave Wehner, the company is investing so heavily in this newer division that "our overall operating profit in 2021 will be approximately $10 billion lower." Zuckerberg also addressed the future in a statement accompanying the results: "I'm excited about our roadmap, particularly as it relates to creators, commerce, and assisting in the metaverse's development."

Wall Street analysts asked questions about the new Facebook initiatives and products like the metaverse and Instagram Reels during the earnings call than they did about Monday's news coverage, demonstrating that investors frequently prioritize the company's growth potential over its risk of harm. Evercore ISI requested an assessment of the company's progress toward developing artificial intelligence capable of detecting potentially harmful content from Zuckerberg. "How much of the content on which we act is discovered by our AI rather than reported by humans," Zuckerberg said, referring to the company's quarterly transparency reports. "In the majority of these categories, we're identifying primarily through the AI system," he explained. "In the majority of these categories, we're identifying through the AI system." He, however, said the success of its systems varies according to category.

Technological Advancement of China

Technological Advancement of China

The question has often surfaced: What makes China's technological advancement superior to many other countries? A long time back, China already opened a front and initiated a campaign to take its place as the world's most powerful economy. To date, China continues on an unrelenting path to attain the much-desired high-tech dominance.

Today, the People's Republic of China flaunts all the confidence of a country that has gradually overcome its midlife economic crisis. Interestingly, China was virtually unaffected by the world's most recent financial crises. Soon, pundits expect China to reclaim a coveted spot among the world's preeminent economies. While China's days of double-digit economic growth passed, the country's economy expanded significantly, reaching 9%; from 2008 to 2010.

Also, in 2010 China overtook Japan as the world's second-largest economy. Soon, China is expected to shove away the US and claim its place as the world's biggest manufacturer. This reminds us that China held this spot for more than 1,500 years, up until 1850. At this time, Britain overtook China and assumed this leadership during the industrial revolution.

Notably, when this passed by almost unnoticed, China (very quietly and deliberately) moved towards a new development stage. The country moved from a booming low and middle-income economy to become a sophisticated high-tech economy. China did this by co-opting, coercing and cajoling Western and Japanese businesses. The Chinese government also plans to increase the nation's R&D expenditures from 1.7%; of GDP right up to 2.5%; by 2020. In the US, the figure is currently 2.7%;. And just like some Western governments, China is currently funding many mega projects in several sunrise areas, including new generation nuclear reactors, quantum physics, nanotechnology, water purification and clean energy.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government is now forcing multinational companies to share technological resources with specific state-owned enterprises; they consider this a requirement to operate in the country. This situation is triggering tension between Beijing and many companies and foreign governments. It also raises the issue of whether China's brand of socialism can coexist with Western capitalism.

Studies show that the Chinese government has-since 2006- been working to implement policies that seek to transfer technology from many multinationals operating in technology-based industries (including power generation, air transportation, information technology, high-speed rail and electric automobiles). The government-imposed rules generally limit the foreign companies' investment; they also limit the companies' access to Chinese markets by stipulating that there must be a high degree of locally produced content in their equipment.

All these regulations are designed to transfer technological knowledge and skills from the companies to China's state-owned enterprises. Indeed, the new government regulations are both unpredictable and complex. The rules are an apparent reversal of several decades of granting these companies much access to Chinese markets. Thus, the companies' CEOs are put in a big dilemma- they can choose to comply with the rules requiring them to share technical knowledge with Chinese competitors; they can decline and miss an opportunity to share the world's fastest-growing single market.

Unsurprisingly, the unorthodox strategy used by the Chinese government has already provoked disputes between the government and foreign companies. Some companies were forced to review their internal strategy. For instance, many companies have been working out how to minimise competitive and security risks that threaten their technologies. Other companies try to determine in advance the innovations they are required to develop in China to gain advantage in this fast-changing, large global marketplace.

Think of it: In 2009, through its Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese government announced that all new technologies utilized in products sold to the (Chinese) government must be developed in China. This rule practically forced many companies to relocate more of their research and development activities to China- unfortunately, China has a notorious record as a country where intellectual properties are pretty unsafe. The Ministry finally backed down from this repressive policy after much protest from multinational companies and governments. But the Chinese authorities did not stop there- they created new regulations that sought to compel multinational companies to relocate most of their sophisticated projects and facilities to China. Of course, the Chinese hoped such policies would help them catch up with the technological pace of the world's leading economies like the US. Will the Chinese government succeed?
